A folder named Windows.old sits on drive C, occupying 20 GB or more. You press Delete and are told you need permission. When the Windows 10 Windows.old folder can’t delete in the normal way, users judolbet88 assume something is broken.
It is not. The folder is created when Windows is upgraded or reinstalled, and it holds the previous installation so that you can go back if needed.
Windows protects it with system permissions. It is supposed to be removed through a cleanup tool, not through File Explorer.
The folder is easy to recognise, as it sits at the top level of drive C alongside the current Windows folder, and it usually appears straight after a feature update or an in-place repair.
What Might Be Causing It
The folder resists deletion for these reasons:
- It is owned by the system, not by your user account.
- It contains protected files with restricted permissions.
- Windows is still within the period in which rollback is offered.
- Some of its files are in use by the recovery feature.
Windows normally deletes the folder automatically after about ten days, though this does not always happen.
Start With These Basic Checks
Use the Storage settings.
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files and wait for the scan to complete.
- Tick “Previous Windows installation(s).”
- Untick anything you want to keep, such as Downloads.
- Select Remove files and wait.
This is the method Microsoft recommends, and it deals with the permissions for you.
Going a Step Further
Use Disk Cleanup if the option was missing or the folder remains.
- Type Disk Cleanup in the search box and open it.
- Choose drive C and select OK.
- Select “Clean up system files” and choose drive C again.
- Tick “Previous Windows installation(s)” and, if listed, “Temporary Windows installation files.”
- Select OK and confirm.
If a small remnant of the folder is left, restart the PC and run Disk Cleanup once more. Open Storage Sense settings and tick “Delete previous versions of Windows” to have it handled automatically in future.
Protect Your Data First
Once Windows.old is deleted, you cannot use “Go back to the previous version of Windows 10.” Before removing it, confirm the current version is working well, and look in C:\Windows.old\Users for any personal files that were not carried over. Do not take ownership and force-delete the folder unless the official tools have failed.
The Bottom Line
Windows.old cannot be deleted like an ordinary folder because it is a protected backup of the previous system. Storage settings and Disk Cleanup remove it properly and recover the space, once you are sure you will not need to roll back.
